The first Sunday of August is celebrated as Friendship Day. The tradition of dedicating a day in honour of friends began in 1935.
“A friendship can weather most things and thrive in thin soil; but it needs a little mulch of letters and phone calls and small, silly presents every so often - just to save it from drying out completely,” said Pam Brown, an Australian poet.
The first Sunday of August is celebrated as Friendship Day. The tradition of dedicating a day in honour of friends began in the U.S. in 1935. Gradually the festival gained popularity and today Friendship Day is celebrated in large number of countries.
Spend time
On this day friends spend time together. Greeting cards and gifts are exchanged and friendship bands are tied on each other's wrist. one popular tradition is is to tie friendship bands. Friendship Day for Adam D'Souza of Std. V, Delhi Public School is, “All about just enjoying with friends, getting together and playing”.
Care for each other
“Friendship Day means a lot to me. It's my favourite day because my friends and I enjoy a lot by tying friendship bands and we also go to our neighbours and friends houses and enjoy the day”, says Antara Hundiwala a Std. V student of Pallavi Model School.
While many enjoy celebrating friendship day and spending time with their friends on this day, there are few others who think friendship day is just another creation by greeting card companies to sell more cards and that friendship should be celebrated everyday not just one day of a year.
Ashni Hundiwala of Std. IX expresses, “According to me friendship day not only means distributing and wearing bands! You are free to celebrate in any day you want.
When you make new friends that day can also be counted as a Friendship Day, so I feel that there should not be any particular day for it. I celebrate it joyfully, making new friends and not forgetting older ones.”
